Writing Everyday #3

Today I got an old computer server. For those wondering what a server is, it's a computer with a different operating system on it that does things autonomously without a graphical interface.

I have spent the last 5-7 years building up services that I run for me and my family; think like a private google photos or dropbox. I went through a stage in life where I wanted to take responsibility of my own files instead of outsourcing responsibility to google or apple. I still have mixed feelings about that decision as there are big pros and big cons to self hosting.

Over the next few days I will revive this computer that has been collecting dust, and document what and how I set up on it. Even if you know you wouldn't do something like this yourself, you can get a feeling for how the mysterious "cloud" works, which we all rely on for everyday functioning.
